References when my manager was laid off too - 8 months and counting

My manager was laid off too and I am unsure who to use as a reference. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 8 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
