References when my manager was laid off too - 8 months and counting

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. There are 16 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. A colleague offered to vouch for me. How do you ask politely?

I kept a note of my results so my references could be specific. They appreciated it.
