References when my manager was laid off too - 13 months and counting

The company closed and I am not sure how to reach former colleagues. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
