The company closed and I am not sure how to reach former colleagues. It has been a long 6 weeks. I have one former client who liked my work. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
