Negotiating pay when I have been out of work - what worked for you?

I do not know whether to give a range or ask for theirs. I am in Minneapolis, in case local advice matters. I looked up ranges in Minneapolis and they vary a lot. How do you research fairly?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

I gave a range based on local postings and said I was flexible depending on the whole package. They did not push back.
