Negotiating an offer, is it too late? - what worked for you?

I received an offer as an accounts payable clerk and I think the pay is a little low. There are 9 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. The hiring manager was friendly and open. What wording worked?

Most employers expect a short conversation. Mine did not even blink.
