Negotiating an offer, is it too late? - what worked for you?

I received an offer as a janitorial supervisor and I think the pay is a little low. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. The hiring manager was friendly and open. What wording worked?

Ask about the range, not a number on its own. It felt more collaborative.
