How much room is there after an offer? (Birmingham)

I received an offer as a retail manager and I think the pay is a little low. It has been a long 11 weeks. The hiring manager was friendly and open. What wording worked?

I thanked them and said I was excited but hoped we could talk about the pay. They came back with a bit more.

Most employers expect a short conversation. Mine did not even blink.
