How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? - what worked for you?

My résumé shows a gap from a layoff and some health issues. Any experience at all would help. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. Did anyone get past it?

I was hired after a 6-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
