How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? (Seattle)

My résumé shows a gap from a layoff and some health issues. I worked as a software tester before this. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. Did anyone get past it?

I was hired after a 14-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
