How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? (San Diego)

I took time out to care for a family member after working as an operations analyst. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I am nervous about being filtered out.

I was hired after a 6-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.
