How do I handle a long gap on my résumé?

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a bookkeeper. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I am nervous about being filtered out. Did anyone get past it?

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.

Keep your skills fresh and mention anything recent. It shows momentum.
