How do I handle a long gap on my résumé?

I have been out of work for 5 months and worry about the gap. It has been a long 3 weeks. I am nervous about being filtered out. What do you say in interviews?

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.

I was hired after a 5-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.
