How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? (Chicago)

My résumé shows a gap from a layoff and some health issues. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I am nervous about being filtered out. How did you handle it on your résumé?

I was hired after a 3-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
