How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? - any advice?

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a mechanic. There are 3 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I am not sure how much to explain. What do you say in interviews?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

I was hired after a 7-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.
