How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? after 12 years as a customer-service rep

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a customer-service rep. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. How did you handle it on your résumé?

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.
