How do I handle a long gap on my résumé?

I have been out of work for 5 months and worry about the gap. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. Did anyone get past it?

I was hired after a 5-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.
