How do I handle a long gap on my résumé? - 5 months and counting

My résumé shows a gap from a layoff and some health issues. I am in Kansas City, in case local advice matters. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. Did anyone get past it?

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.
