Getting references after a company closes - what worked for you?

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I am in Cincinnati, in case local advice matters. I have one former client who liked my work. Who did you use?

I kept a note of my results so my references could be specific. They appreciated it.

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
