Getting references after a company closes - any advice?

My manager was laid off too and I am unsure who to use as a reference. It has been a long 20 weeks. HR only confirms titles and dates. Who did you use?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.
