Getting references after a company closes after 9 years as a production planner

My manager was laid off too and I am unsure who to use as a reference. I am in Seattle, in case local advice matters. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Use a professional network to find a former manager. Many will still write a note.
