Getting references after a company closes after 16 years as an administrative assistant

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I have been trying to stay organised about it. HR only confirms titles and dates. Is a client acceptable?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
