Getting references after a company closes after 10 years as a payroll clerk

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. HR only confirms titles and dates. Who did you use?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
