Getting references after a company closes - 23 weeks in

I worry a reference will only confirm dates of employment. I am in Detroit, in case local advice matters. I have one former client who liked my work. Who did you use?

I kept a note of my results so my references could be specific. They appreciated it.

A client reference worked well for me. It shows you deliver outside the company too.
