Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff - what worked for you?

My résumé shows a gap from a layoff and some health issues. I am in Milwaukee, in case local advice matters. I am nervous about being filtered out. Did anyone get past it?

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 10 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
