Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff - any advice?

I have been out of work for 8 months and worry about the gap. I am not sure how much to explain. Did anyone get past it?

I was hired after a 8-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
