Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff - any advice?

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a medical assistant. There are 11 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time.

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.
