Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff - any advice?

I took time out to care for a family member after working as an accountant. There are 3 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I am nervous about being filtered out. Did anyone get past it?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 12 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
