Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff - any advice?

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a school bus driver. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. What do you say in interviews?

I was hired after a 5-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.

A short, honest line such as 'family caregiving' is enough for most employers. They mostly want to know you are ready now.
