Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff after 5 years as a retail manager

I have been out of work for 8 months and worry about the gap. Any experience at all would help. I am nervous about being filtered out. Did anyone get past it?

I was hired after a 8-month gap. The manager said the skills test mattered more than the dates.
