Explaining a gap after caregiving or layoff after 18 years as a quality inspector

I took time out to care for a family member after working as a quality inspector. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I am nervous about being filtered out. What do you say in interviews?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
