Cold messages to people in my field, do they work? - what worked for you?

I sent 7 messages on a professional network and got two replies. There are 7 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. Some people reply with short answers. How do you phrase the request?

I asked what they wish they had known at my stage. People enjoy answering that.

Do not apologise for asking. Most people remember someone who helped them.
