Cold messages to people in my field, do they work?

I sent 10 messages on a professional network and got two replies. This is my first time dealing with any of this. Some people reply with short answers. What did you ask?

Do not apologise for asking. Most people remember someone who helped them.

I asked what they wish they had known at my stage. People enjoy answering that.
