Cold messages to people in my field, do they work? - any advice?

I sent 14 messages on a professional network and got two replies. I do not usually post, so bear with me. Some people reply with short answers. What did you ask?

Do not apologise for asking. Most people remember someone who helped them.

I asked what they wish they had known at my stage. People enjoy answering that.
