Cold messages to people in my field, do they work? - any advice?

I sent 18 messages on a professional network and got two replies. It has been a long 6 weeks. I want advice, not a job directly.

I asked what they wish they had known at my stage. People enjoy answering that.

Do not apologise for asking. Most people remember someone who helped them.
