Changing careers at 9 years into a job, is it realistic?

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
