Changing careers at 8 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

After 8 years as a barista I am thinking about moving into a different field. I am in Boston, in case local advice matters. My family is supportive but nervous.

I took a small pay cut for a year, and it was worth it for the growth afterwards.
