Changing careers at 7 years into a job, is it realistic? (Honolulu)

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. There are 7 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. My family is supportive but nervous. How did you start?

I took a small pay cut for a year, and it was worth it for the growth afterwards.
