Changing careers at 7 years into a job, is it realistic? - 13 months and counting

I want to move from project coordinator to something with more stability. There are 7 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. How did you start?

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
