Changing careers at 5 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

After 5 years as a mechanic I am thinking about moving into a different field. It has been a long 23 weeks. I have a little time and a small budget for training.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
