Changing careers at 3 years into a job, is it realistic? - any advice?

I want to move from administrative assistant to something with more stability. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. I have a little time and a small budget for training. How did you start?

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
