Changing careers at 18 years into a job, is it realistic? (update)

After 18 years as a hotel front-desk agent I am thinking about moving into a different field. I have been trying to stay organised about it. My family is supportive but nervous. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
