Changing careers at 18 years into a job, is it realistic? (update)

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. I worked as a medical assistant before this. I have a little time and a small budget for training.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
