Changing careers at 17 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. I do not usually post, so bear with me. My family is supportive but nervous. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
