Changing careers at 17 years into a job, is it realistic? - 12 months and counting

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. My family is supportive but nervous. Has anyone made a similar move?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
