Changing careers at 13 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

After 13 years as an administrative assistant I am thinking about moving into a different field. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets.

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
