Changing careers at 12 years into a job, is it realistic? (update)

After 12 years as a quality inspector I am thinking about moving into a different field. There are 12 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. My family is supportive but nervous. Did you take a pay cut?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
