Changing careers at 11 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

After 11 years as a sales associate I am thinking about moving into a different field. It has been a long 13 weeks. My family is supportive but nervous. How did you start?

I took a small pay cut for a year, and it was worth it for the growth afterwards.
