Changing careers at 11 years into a job, is it realistic? - any advice?

I want to move from software tester to something with more stability. I would rather hear the honest version than the polite one. I have a little time and a small budget for training. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
