Changing careers at 10 years into a job, is it realistic? - what worked for you?

I want to move from web developer to something with more stability. I do not usually post, so bear with me. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. Has anyone made a similar move?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
